Hope

Those 4 letters carried me through my darkest times with fibromyalgia and being a parent of a bipolar son. I found a ring that held those letters and when my hope of being better started to fade I had that ring to remind me to keep going! And in turn, when I thought I could not take another belittling session from my son, or endure one of his rage episodes I knew that “Hope” would get me through.

Well recently I want to memorialize that word a bit more permanently. I began toying around with a tattoo. Now, let me tell you getting a tattoo was no light decision. My mother is probably rolling around in her grave, but this is what I needed to do for me! So, I thought long and hard about how to translate all I wanted into a tattoo, I came up with this…

IMG_8281[1]

SO… the infinity symbol is for the love between my hubby and I. He has been by my side even at the bottom! He did all the cleaning, shuffling kids and grocery shopping when they were just beyond my ability to get done for the day. He chauffeured me to dr appointments when I could not get myself there. He fought with the doctors for answers…22 years of marriage + 7 dating so I think we are set for eternity.

Hubby is a police officer so that is the thin blue line in the middle that ties all officers and their families together. AND HOPE to remind me that with hope I can face any challenge. (Even the parenting a teenager with bipolar challenge)

I would love to hear your thoughts! Kicking my heels up today!

Our Ways – We Have Choices

For my whole life I had fallen into a fallacy that the only way to get medical help was to go to a medical doctor. I was in the group of 99% of American who had the mindset of go to the doctor, get a pill and expect to feel well.

My mom did her best to guide me in the direction of health. When her own health failed my vision began to get cloudy. No longer did I see the health care system as one that could “fix” everything. In 2012 my own health started to diminish. At 44, I had a rheumatologist, neurologist, gastroentrologist, gynecologist, endocrinologist, primary care and psychiatrist! I had 25 prescriptions and a HUGE out of pile of building medical bills. All this and I still felt AWFUL!!! When my doctor said “IT is time you consider disability”, I had a wake up call.

A personality trait of mine is that I DON’T GIVE UP OR GIVE IN easily. So I set my own path to find a way to keep the job I love so much! Alternatives… Western Medicine, acupuncture, supplements, essential oils all available or no clue IF they could help me, how to use them, who could help? So good ‘ole Google became my friend that summer! I stumbled across a company that was not new. I like stability, research, knowledge. So in I jumped! Essential Oils here I come!

18 months later I have 1 medication (synthroid as I have no working thyroid), a primary care and tons of oils! So my new ways are using oils everyday. Helping others discover the benefits for them and FEELING BETTER than I ever have before.

So a fellow blogger posed these questions that go me thinking. I know what I did when traditional medicine did not help? What are your opinions?

Take the challenge here!

https://closetoeighty.wordpress.com/2015/01/10/new-challenge-our-ways/

Should each of us take responsibility for her/his health? How important is fitness, prevention of diseases? Is it necessary to teach children about health? How can we drastically cut number of obese people? How can we cut expenses? Must medical schools teach courses of nutrition, aromatherapy, etc.? Should we rely less on medications?

The Trap or Is It?

I am not a big one on New Year’s Resolutions as I think of each day as a day to make a change. But reading everyone’s choice to make January the 1st as THE day to resolve to make a change in their life I always wonder, “What can I do today better than I did yesterday?” What will a RESOLVE to do tomorrow better than I did today? What a powerful word it is!

RESOLVE

Well this causes me to reflect on yesterday…what choices did I make that I could have made better ones? Yelling at my kids a bit too much, spending too much time on Social Media, not calling that friend I should have, eating too much chocolate, drinking that soda.

All ring true for me! So… I have some work to to as clearly we can all do BETTER… Not be perfect but make slow steady improvements.

A step in the right direction is a daily conscious CHOICE and NOT always the easiest to follow through with. But step by step we can RESOLVE to do better and be better. Less, chocolate, yelling, more family time, more special conversations.

So here are MY choices one to take on a MINOR weight-loss challenge by drinking water instead of soda (not that I drink it often But…I can Just say NO soda!) Less yelling… Taking a time out and THINK before I jump on my teens. Committed family time each day MINUS the social media.

I am committing to a morning, afternoon and evening ritual of oils to drop 5 pounds.  I will join in an online challenge to encourage others and stick to MY PLAN. Wanna come along? Comment for more info. Comment to give me a bit of encouragement, comment with what YOU resolve to do!

Good to the LAST Drop!

A sad day came last week when my Ningxia Red bottle was EMPTY! I started drinking this bunch of deliciousness about 5 months ago to give it a whirl. With fibro that run down, sluggish moving through sludge feeling is always a day away. So anything to try to rid my self of it or make it a bit better I was willing to try. The benefits seemed to great to not give it a “shot”! That is all that is needed a day…2 oz a “shot” a day! So I ordered a bottle.  Just look at the promises…

NingXia-Red_1

I started 2 oz 2x a day… What I noticed over the course of several weeks, was the ability to recover from strenuous days better, the ability to think clearer and faster (fibro fog was fading), more energy to make it through the day, (I was not longing for a caffeine boost in the late afternoon, the muscle aches and pains fading. After a few weeks  dropped down to once a day and was able to maintain that wonderful feeling! Along with all my other oils I almost felt “cured” from fibro! Giddiness, euphoria, shock is all I can say!!

Enter the DAY… Panic mode… Empty bottle!!!! I bolted for the computer to check to see when my next delivery was due. A few days…Ugg… well I though heck what is a few days… I will be fine… Calendar…HOLIDAYS which only means DELAYED delivery! Double panic!! So at the mercy of Fed Ex wait was all I could do!

You know teachers on winter break…high hopes of getting things done around the house? Yep, I did it! The dreaded chore of mine cleaning out the closet… the day I knew I would, could NEVER run out of this gem of a product EVER AGAIN. The day after cleaning out the closet, the up, down, climbing, reaching, stretching turned into aching, and pains like I have not felt in a LONG time! In the fibro world we say I used a month of “spoons” in just one day! “WHERE is my Ningxia Red???” I am ready to phone a friend to have her give up a bottle in her stash! Tracking my package like a hawk. I went on the internet again just to read all what this product could do! Just look at all the Ningxia Red Products.

I feel like my life bar is draining. Scrambling to find other local products to “fill the gap”! Greedy for that feel good feeling for sure!!

The Nose Knows

I have not found an appliance I have been more in love with! Love my Keurig, microwave, hair dryer, Crock Pot and Magic Bullet, but none hold a candle to my Home Diffuser!

Never heard of a diffuser? Neither had I before July 2013 until I entered the world of essential oils. And now I CAN NOT live without one! This is what it is! It combines a humidifier, air purifier, atomizer, and aromatherapy that safely releases essential oils into the air to eliminate odors and create a spa-like atmosphere. Sounds glorious right? Well let me tell you it is! What one product can take you back to your childhood, put you to sleep, help you when you are sick? None… The key is in the nose!

diffuser

The olfactory system includes all physical organs or cells relating to, or contributing to, the sense of smell. When we inhale through the nose, airborne molecules interact with the olfactory organs and, almost immediately, the brain.

Molecules inhaled through the nose or mouth are also carried to the lungs and interact with the respiratory system. Thus, inhaled essential oils can affect the body through several systems and pathways.

Interaction with the Limbic System (Emotional Brain)

During inhalation, odor molecules travel through the nose and affect the brain through a variety of receptor sites, one of which is the limbic system, which is commonly referred to as the “emotional brain.”

The limbic system is directly connected to those parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance (Higley & Higley, 1998). This relationship helps explain why smells often trigger emotions. Knowing this, we can hypothesize how inhalation of essential oils can have some very profound physiological and psychological effects!

“Smell is a potent wizard that transports us across thousands of miles and all the years we have lived.” Helen Keller

So, depending on the oil you place in the diffuser the reaction of the body is different.

Once taking 2 different sleep medications now just Cedarwood Oil, Peace and Calming Oil (tangerine, orange, ylang ylang, patchouli and blue tansy), valerian root and melatonin I can get a great night’s sleep. This was something I once thought an impossibility without a script! Natural products allow me to function daily with a clear brain. two years ago I would have NEVER believed this to be possible.

I now have 3 diffusers! One in my bedroom for sleep, kitchen for the common areas and in my classroom (my home away from home).

CAUTION: I had someone who had heard me talk about my diffuser and they ordered one online. Within a week theirs had broken and they wanted to know how long mine lasted. All I can say is Young Living’s diffusers come with a 1 Year warranty. I would NOT be buying mine online from Amazon or from Whole Foods as I like that I can return it within a year if it were to break. I can say my first two diffusers, that are over a year a still going strong. My latest one the Bamboo Diffuser used EVERYDAY!!

diffuser 1

From the scent of Christmas with cinnamon and orange to sleepy scents like cedarwood, Peace and Calming and Lavender to waking up with Lemon and Peppermint I will NEVER be without one of these handy appliances again. Addicted? YES!!!!!

Lemongrass – Inflammation Reducer and Oh so much More!

My biggest improvement came after realizing that this Essential Oil was ESSENTIAL for me on a DAILY basis! I was taking 5 drops a day in a capsule, inflammation in my joints and muscles was decreasing!

lemongrass

Then… the dreaded hysterectomy and the doctors told me no anti-inflammatories. I asked if Essential Oils that worked on inflammation counted? The doctor did a quick read on the internet of Lemongrass (Nope, he did not know too much about Essential Oils) and said “YES, You need to stop it for a week prior and up to two weeks after due to the risk of bleeding”. No anti-inflammories before and after surgery!  I did not think too much about it at first… It would just be a few weeks!

pain

Well as you know when things are going well somehow you seem to quickly forget about how bad things were. After three days my hands were sooo painful in the am I began to wonder WHAT is going on? When my knees and hips were back to feeling like I was 80 (NO, I am NOT even close) I knew something was up! My pain level quickly increased!

pain rating

I went through my routine and questioned, “What was different?” When I saw the lemongrass bottle sitting in the back corner of the counter where I moved it so I did not accidentally take it before my surgery I was hit like a TON of BRICKS! 5 little drops could do that? Well I SUFFERED and I do mean SUFFERED through the next three weeks and then once I returned the heavenly little bottle back to my stash of daily oils I bumped the 5 drops up to 10! My thoughts were if 5 did that what would 10 do! I started taking 5am and  5 pm! Well, I am happy to report with the maintainance of this I am virtually pain-free in the joints and muscles. (Of course, this in addition to my other daily oils)

lemongrassoil

Just read at ALL of the benefits of Lemongrass Oil!!! Really, It IS QUITE AMAZING!!!

Analgesic: Things that are considered an analgesic reduce pain and inflammation. Lemongrass Essential Oil helps relieve pain in muscles and joints, as well as toothaches and headaches resulting from viral infections like cough, cold, influenza, fever. It also helps cure general body pain resulting from strenuous activities and athletics.

Antidepressant: Boosts self esteem, confidence, hope and mental strength, and it uplifts spirits and fights depression. This can be very helpful to drive away depression due to failures in their career, personal life, insecurity, loneliness, stagnation, death in the family and many other reasons. This also relieves anxiety. As an antidepressant, lemongrass can be systematically administered to patients of acute depression who are undergoing rehabilitation after acute shock. Basically, take it with your tea and relax.

Antimicrobial and Antibacterial: Lemongrass has antimicrobial properties which makes it an inhibitor of microbial and bacterial growth in the body, both internally and externally. It is also known to be effective in inhibiting bacterial infections in the colon, stomach, urinary tracts, wounds, respiratory system, and other organ systems. while also helping to cure diseases resulting from bacterial or microbial infections such as typhoid, food poisoning, skin diseases, and body odor.

Anti-pyretic: An anti-pyretic is an agent that brings down very high fevers. This is quite similar to a febrifuge but it is effective on very high fevers as well. This oil can bring down a fever when it is beginning to reach dangerous levels. This property of Lemongrass, which comes from its essential oils, is widely known and utilized. It is often served in tea for this very purpose.

Antiseptic: The antiseptic properties of Lemongrass Oil make it a good application for external and internal wounds as well as an ingredient of antiseptic lotions and creams. The antiseptic properties of this oil do not let the external and internal cuts and wounds become septic.

Astringent: An astringent helps the stoppage of blood flow by contraction of the blood vessels. If someone is bleeding profusely, you need to utilize an astringent to speed up clotting of the blood and stop the flow to save his or her life. The fact that lemongrass is an astringent helps in a different way too. It promotes contraction of gums, hair follicles, muscles, skin and blood vessels, thereby preventing loosening and falling out of teeth, hair loss and it reduces the flow of blood through the vessels. Some of these properties can be life-saving, so lemongrass is an essential source of astringent.

Deodorant: Lemongrass Oil is far better than many of the synthetic deodorants that are a big expense, a heavy impact on the environment, and have limited lasting power. Also, those types of deodorant can sometimes produce irritation on the skin and can exacerbate certain allergies. Lemongrass oil can be a far better choice as a deodorant because it does not do any of these things. In a diluted form, it serves as an efficient deodorant without any side effects. The best thing about this is that it is herbal, so there is no damage to your body or the environment.

Diuretic: Lemongrass Oil increases urination, both in frequency and in quantity. This may sound not that important but it can be very beneficial for health. When a person urinates, fats are lost from the body, because 4% of the volume of urine is composed of fats. Obviously, the more you urinate, the more you lose fat. Urination also promotes digestion and inhibits the formation of excess gas. It removes excess water from the body and reduces swelling. Its most important contribution is that it removes toxins from the body, not to mention its ability to reduce blood pressure. That is the reason that most pharmaceutical medications for lowering blood pressure induce frequent urination. Urination also helps clean out the kidneys.

Febrifuge: Lemongrass Oil helps bring down fevers by battling the infections from which the fever is caused, as well as by increasing perspiration, which induces sweating out of toxins.

Fungicidal: Lemongrass Oil has good fungicidal properties and may be used to cure fungal infections, both external and internal.

Insecticidal: Lemongrass is quite popular as an insect repellant due to its insecticidal properties. It kills insects and also keeps them away, but there isn’t enough research to know exactly which insects it affects, so there is no promise on cockroaches!

Nervine: Lemongrass Essential Oil acts as a tonic for the nerves and the nervous system in general. It helps cure many nervous disorders such as shaking hands or limbs, nervousness, vertigo, Alzihemer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and convulsions, sluggishness, and lack of reflexes. It strengthens the nerves throughout the body and stimulates them.

Sedative: Being a sedative is perhaps one of the most important and most appreciated medicinal properties of Lemongrass Oil. It has a great soothing, sedating and calming effects on mind, cures inflammations, itching of skin and it relieves tension and anxiety. This feature can help patients of insomnia as well.

Tonic: An agent which tones up and boosts health is a tonic. Lemongrass Oil is a tonic in a very clear sense. It tones all the systems functioning in the body, such as respiratory system, digestive system, nervous system and excretory system and facilitates absorption of nutrients into the body, thus providing strength and boosting the immune system.

Having Lived with Chronic pain I have learned may things including to…
